Antique 19th Century Limoges Haviland Oyster plate from France
This is a rare antique porcelain oyster plate by Haviland in Limoges, France, some time before 1891 as indicated by the absence of “France” on its base.
The plate is beautifully decorated by hand with sponged gilt over a very deep cobalt blue ground. There are 5 oyster wells on the plate, each outlined with a sponged gilt border. It has two almost un-noticeable, chip repairs at the border, which has been covered with new gilt.
The plate has two maker’s marks: A green underglaze “H & Co. / DEPOSE” indicating that the blank was made by Haviland, and a red overglaze “Haviland & Co. Limoges” inside a double circle indicating that the plate was also hand painted at the Haviland factory in Limoges, France.
An exceptional beautiful piece which is useful as well as very decorative and an incredible addition for any collector.
