Vintage Japanese ukiyo-e Style Painting ~ Silk

A unique vintage Japanese Style Ukiyo-e Painting. Painted in India on Silk with completely naturally-derived pigments, which was likely made for the Export Market. Approximately from the 1970-80's.  

Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. It typically depicted scenes of everyday life, landscapes, kabuki actors, and beautiful women, often produced as woodblock prints. Artists like Kitagawa Utamaro and Torii Kiyonaga were masters of this genre, known for their elegant portrayals of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women).

Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806) was one of the most celebrated artists of the Edo period, renowned for his exquisite depictions of women. His works are characterized by their delicate lines, subtle color palettes, and intimate portrayals of female beauty and emotion. The scene depicted, with women by a lake, is a common theme in ukiyo-e, reflecting the aesthetic appreciation for nature and leisure activities. The detailed patterns of the kimonos are incredible and entirely done with very fine brushstrokes. Reproductions like these, especially painted on silk are not available anymore and totally unique. 

We recommend to frame the painting in a beautiful black bamboo frame with a contrast coloured passe-partout to give it a more refines look and clean edges. Please get in touch with us if you would like us to get it framed for you, which would get charged at extra cost. 

Please note that this is a vintage piece of art which shows signs of aging, such as small chips of paint. There is a small tear at the bottom left, which is easy to hide by adding matting around the edges and just reduce the size of the artwork.
